In 1999, the 1st International Conference on Design for Safety was successfully held in Glasgow as a WEGEMT Euro Conference with the sponsorship of the European Commission. Responding to the expectation from the world maritime safety community, the 2nd was held in 2004 in Sakai with the sponsorship of the Ship and Ocean Foundation in Japan. The 3rd was held in Berkeley in 2007.

This year the Design for Safety conference also includes the 3rd Workshop on Risk-Based Approaches in the Marine Industries, in a single event in Trieste.
