History

Introduction and History

The first International Conference on Design for Safety was held in Glasgow as a WEGEMT Conference (a European association of universities in Marine Technology) with the sponsorship of the European Commission. The second conference was held in 2004 in Sakai, Japan, as part of a series of technical conferences forming the "Osaka Colloquium" (together with the International Conference on Collision and Grounding of Ships and the International Ship Stability Workshop). This third conference is scheduled to be immediately preceding PRADS 2007 (Practical Design of Ships and other floating structures) in Houston Texas on October 1-5.

Objectives

The conference is organized to present the state of the art of design for safety, where safety is not treated as a design constraint but rather as a design objective aiming to enhance the value of the ship in a competitive and safety-conscious market.

The conference welcomes papers on all aspects of Design for Safety and topics in the areas of:

  • Philosophy and framework of Design for Safety, such as safety culture, active and passive safety, life cycle design, risk based regulation
  • Methodology and applications of Design for Safety, including risk analysis, Formal Safety Assessment, and first principles and risk based design
  • Ship stability safety, including intact and damage stability, probabilistic assessments, high speed craft and fishing vessel safety, performance based stability regulation
  • Fire and explosion safety, such as fire risk analysis and alternative design approaches
  • Structural strength for passenger, tanker, and bulk carrier safety and reliability
  • Operational safety, including decision support systems, training aspects, passenger evacuation and return to port capabilities for passenger ships
